Common uPVC door faults

Most uPVC door problems come down to a handful of parts.

The handle has gone floppy

A handle that droops or won't lift usually means a broken spring cassette or gearbox. We replace the failed part so the handle works the locking points again.

The key won't turn or the door won't lock

If the handle lifts but the key won't turn, or the door won't lock at all, the gearbox or cylinder has usually failed. We diagnose which and replace it.

The door has dropped

Hinges loosen over time and the door sags, making the locking points catch on the frame. We adjust the hinges and keeps so it closes and locks without force.

How a uPVC door lock works

A uPVC or composite door uses a multipoint lock: a long strip inside the door with hooks, rollers or bolts along its length. Lifting the handle throws these points into keeps on the frame, and turning the key locks them in place. The gearbox in the middle drives everything, and it's the part that wears most.

Because everything is connected, one worn part affects the rest. A sagging door strains the gearbox, a stiff gearbox strains the cylinder, and a stiff cylinder snaps keys. That's why we look at the whole door, not just the part that's failed.

Most mechanisms can be repaired by replacing the gearbox or a section of the strip, which costs less than a full replacement. Where the whole mechanism is worn or obsolete, we fit a compatible replacement and a new anti-snap cylinder at the same time.

uPVC door repair FAQs

Why has my uPVC door handle gone floppy?

Usually because the spring cassette or gearbox has broken. We replace the failed part so the handle works again.

My door won't lock. What's wrong?

It's often a misaligned door, a worn gearbox or a failed cylinder. We diagnose the cause on site and fix it.

Can you repair a composite door?

Yes. Composite doors use the same multipoint locks as uPVC doors, so we repair them in the same way.

Do I need a whole new mechanism?

Not usually. Replacing the gearbox or adjusting the door is often enough. We only recommend a full mechanism when it's worn throughout.

Can you fix a uPVC door at night?

If the door won't lock and your home isn't secure, yes. We'll come out at any hour.
