When to book a lock change

A lock change is about control: knowing every key that exists for your door.

Moving into a new home

Previous owners, their family, cleaners and builders may all still have keys. Changing the locks on moving day is one of the first jobs we recommend.

Between tenancies

Landlords and letting agents use us to change locks between tenants, so outgoing occupants and their copies can't get back in.

When someone moves out

If a lodger, flatmate or former partner who shouldn't have access still holds a key, a lock change removes that access straight away.

What a lock change involves

On uPVC and composite doors, a lock change usually means replacing the euro cylinder. It's a quick job: the cylinder is held by a single retaining screw, and a new one comes with fresh keys. We can fit an anti-snap cylinder at the same time if your door needs it.

Timber doors usually have a night latch, a mortice deadlock or both. Changing these means replacing the lock body or, on some locks, just the cylinder. We match the new lock to the existing cut-outs so the door isn't weakened.

A lock change and a lock replacement aren't quite the same. A lock change keeps the same type of lock with new keys, while a lock replacement swaps an old or failing lock for a better one. We'll tell you which your door needs.

Lock change FAQs

How long does a lock change take?

Most cylinder changes take a few minutes per door, and mortice lock changes usually take under an hour.

Should I change the locks when I move house?

Yes. You can't know how many keys the previous owners gave out, so changing the locks is a simple way to secure your new home.

Can tenants change the locks?

Check your tenancy agreement first. Many require the landlord's permission, and you may need to give them a key.

Can one key open all my doors after a lock change?

Often, yes. If your doors use euro cylinders, we can fit keyed-alike cylinders so one key opens them all.

Do you change locks for letting agents?

Yes. We work with agents and landlords on changeovers, and can send invoices directly to them.
