Fish Island grew up as a Victorian industrial district, and much of it is now a conservation area. Former works on Dace Road, Smeed Road and Stour Road have become studios, workshops and live-work homes, and a 2009 study counted around 600 artists' studios across the area. Doors on these buildings are often older, heavier and wider than domestic doors, so standard locks don't always fit.
Along the Hertford Union Canal and the Lea, newer apartment blocks sit beside the old works. Their flat doors are usually fire-rated with euro cylinders, and lockouts or lost keys are handled with a cylinder change rather than a new lock.
