Lockouts and emergencies
What should I do if I'm locked out?
Stay calm, check whether another door or window can be used safely, and call us with your address. We'll give you a price and an arrival time, then get you in without damage wherever possible.
Can a locksmith open a door without the key?
Yes. Locksmiths use techniques such as picking, latch slipping and specialist bypass tools, which is exactly why we always check proof of address first.
What counts as a locksmith emergency?
Any situation where you can't get in, can't lock your property, or a lock has been damaged in a break-in. If you're unsure, call us for advice.
Can you free a key that's stuck in the lock?
Yes. We free stuck keys and extract broken ones with proper tools, then check the lock for damage. See our broken keys page.
What if someone vulnerable is locked inside?
If there's any danger to life, call 999 first. Then tell us immediately when you call, and we'll prioritise reaching you.
Do your locksmiths come out at night?
Yes, every night, including weekends and bank holidays.
Prices and payment
How do your prices work?
We give you a fixed total for the job before a locksmith sets off. It covers the work and parts we've agreed, with no surprise extras.
Why aren't prices listed on the website?
Every door and lock is different, so a fixed list would either overcharge simple jobs or undercharge complex ones. A quick call or photo lets us price your job accurately.
Is a call-out fee added on top?
No. Getting a locksmith to you is already included in the fixed price we quote.
Will I receive an invoice?
Yes. You'll get an itemised invoice for every job we complete.
Can my landlord or letting agent pay?
Yes, if they've agreed to it. We regularly invoice landlords and agents directly.
Can you price a job from a photo?
Often, yes. A clear photo of the lock face and the edge of the door lets us identify the lock and give you a likely price.
Locks and security
What's the difference between a night latch and a deadlock?
A night latch locks automatically when the door shuts and opens with a key outside or a knob inside. A deadlock only locks with a key, making it much harder to force. Most timber doors should have both.
What is lock snapping?
It's a burglary method that breaks a weak euro cylinder in two to open the door. Anti-snap cylinders rated TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond are designed to resist it.
How can I tell if my cylinder is anti-snap?
Look for a Kitemark with stars or a Sold Secure logo on the face of the cylinder. If there are no markings at all, it's probably a standard cylinder.
How often should locks be replaced?
There's no fixed lifespan. Replace a lock when it becomes stiff or unreliable, after a break-in, or when it no longer meets your insurer's requirements.
Is it possible to have one key for every door?
If your doors use euro cylinders, keyed-alike cylinders can let a single key open all of them.
Do uPVC doors need maintenance?
A little. Lubricating the mechanism once or twice a year and keeping the hinges adjusted helps prevent gearbox failures and snapped keys.
Landlords, tenants and businesses
Should landlords change the locks between tenants?
It's strongly advisable. Previous tenants may have kept copies, and a new cylinder protects both the property and the incoming tenant.
Is a tenant allowed to change the locks?
Only if the tenancy agreement permits it. Most require the landlord's permission and a copy of the new key.
Does the landlord need to be there?
No. We can arrange access with tenants or collect keys, then send the invoice to the landlord or agent.
Can you work on a shop after it closes?
Yes. We fit and repair commercial locks before opening or after closing, so trading isn't disrupted.
What are restricted keys?
They're keys for special cylinders that can only be copied with authorisation, giving businesses control over who holds a key.
Do you fix shared entrance doors?
Yes. We repair locks and door closers on communal entrances for managing agents, housing providers and residents.
